BEHIND THE SCENES:
WONDER is unlike anything OUT LOUD Theatre has created in the past. Part art installation, part performance - this piece is truly a unique and fully immersive experience based on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. "You quite literally are offered an experience to step into and through this world," says Artistic Director, Kira Hawkridge. "No matter your relationship with the source material and its many interpretations and adaptations that are readily on hand to explore, we encourage audiences to be prepared to expect the unexpected. WONDER is OUT LOUD Theatre's authentic meditation on what it means to make the ordinary extraordinary, to engage with our imaginations, and to push our own creative and artistic boundaries beyond what we thought was possible. We are taking our definition of immersive experience to the next level and inviting our audiences to challenge any preconceived notions they might have of what live theater "should" and ultimately can be."
WONDER is OUT LOUD's first installment in their upcoming 3-Part Series premiering this June, all part of OUT LOUD's Season 6: Seeing is Believing (An Exploration of Fantasy & Unreality).

ERIKA RETHORN, Alice
"The reality of what we have decided to undertake in this season is only just beginning to sink in, yet this new creative process has felt unbelievably natural. So far the shape of the exploration that the audience will be invited to take is entirely in the hands of the 8 actors in the room alongside (AD) Kira Hawkridge and (TD) Marc Tiberiis II. We have been given the opportunity to expand our capabilities as actors to help design and build the environment. We have painted on walls, planned afternoon tea parties, and sat in circles, daydreaming of the possibilities of our world. We are so excited to stretch our imaginations in new and thrilling ways that will challenge and inspire our guests."
SIOBHAN LAPORTE-CAULEY, THE QUEEN
"This process has felt different as an actor, because our first focus is to create a fully immersive environment for the audience. While an immersive experience is always our goal, this production brings our participants through the Looking Glass with us, and it's going to be a wild ride!"
ALIJAH DICKENSON, THE CHESHIRE CAT
"Working on WONDER has been freeing creatively and emotionally. Having this environment to literally throw stuff at the wall has been liberating and given me confidence in my ideas and creativity. It's wonderful to be in a place where you truly feel safe and supported to explore your space and your character."
DAVID NANDO RODGERS, THE MAD HATTER
"WONDER is planting yourself on the page. I think I personally have always wondered what it would be like to engage with that world on my own terms. And we invite your to have just that experience!"

The images above offer a window into the first phase of the "WONDER" process, highlighting key moments throughout the ensemble's early artistic experimentation, exploration, and varying forms of collaborative discovery. The ensemble of "WONDER" have spent January & February of 2018 experimenting with varying visual elements, written prompts, and open discussion "jams" to build this collaborative process, and in turn this immersive world. They collectively entered the space with the expansive theme of "Wonderland" along with their specific character titles inspired by Lewis Carol's classic work, Alice in Wonderland. This team developed their process from scratch, allowing each new phase of this project to organically unfold. Through these authentically driven explorations specific source materials, areas of research, and expansive forms of initial inspirations were developed and expanded upon as a collective. At this phase in the process a framework has emerged, born from each member of the ensemble's free-form & guided explorations. This framework is now ready to move into the next phase of becoming fully developed and fully realized as a cohesive visual art installation that will be the landscape of OUT LOUD Theatre's WONDER performance in June. March, April, & May of 2018 will continue this ensemble's collective journey of bringing this world to life.
"I encourage the audience to throw away any preconceived notions of what they think is going to happen. This experience is completely immersive and interactive, even by OUT LOUD standards." - Justin Fortin, The White Rabbit.
