About
OUT LOUD Theatre is Rhode Island's Critically Acclaimed Premiere Movement Ensemble known for their groundbreaking and form defying creations and expansive ensemble driven methodology, led by Founding Artistic Director, Kira Hawkridge.
Since its founding in 2012, OUT LOUD has organically evolved into one of the most experimental and avant-garde collaboratives in the region. In its current form, OUT LOUD creates highly physical, predominantly non-verbal, visually driven, emotionally visceral, and radically collaborative ensemble creations “where movement dominates over dialogue, and the imaginations of the ensemble run wild.”
Utilizing Founding Artistic Director, Kira Hawkridge's original ensemble methodology, Collective Breath, OUT LOUD Theatre devises, adapts, and reimagines new and existing material into yearly "Seasons" based on a common yet expansive theme chosen by the ensemble. Each year adheres to a custom built ensemble structure and schedule that fully supports the needs of each unique and transformative Season.
OUT LOUD Theatre’s creations have spanned from their circus themed adaptation of King Lear (where audiences traveled through the mad King's mind on moving carnival ride styled platforms); to their fully immersive and interactive 1300 sq ft Art Installation and Performance Art Exhibit based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland entitled WONDER (where audiences engaged with 7 interconnected Art Installation “environments”, entering “Wonderland” through Alice’s 20ft refrigerator, complete with life-sized food, located in her hyper realistic “studio apartment”); to their wholly original and devised movement ensemble works ESCAPE and Creation X. ESCAPE focuses on one woman’s journey through grief after the death of her twin brother, told entirely through devised movement and music in a 7ft x 7ft white pit filled with white spheres providing an expansive and tangible engagement with her emotional core. Creation X is an examination of existential horror through the lens of a graduate level scientist who is forced to confront her own humanity when her experiment (a “Monster”) escapes from his containment.
During the Pandemic, OUT LOUD created multiple full length devised and collaboratively written scripts entitled "hello my love it's time" and "The Melting Mind." "hello my love it's time" is a viscerally exploratory multi-media experience developed through collectively created language, visual art, and soundscapes. The development of this project began in January of 2021 as a means of documenting this moment in time, and has evolved into an expansive collaborative teaching tool utilized in educational institutions across New England, including through one of OUT LOUD's longest standing collaborations with Sara Ossana at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). "The Melting Mind" is, at its core, a meditation on memory. Through non linear expressions of past, present, and future, a chorus of voices and bodies in space journey through the ebbs and flows of time, dreams, color, and nostalgia, exploring what it means to live a life - to form bonds, to make mistakes, to love deeply, to be informed and shaped by our memories as we continue to create and experience new ones, and what it can mean when those memories fade or transform entirely.
A Best of Rhode Island Winner in 2016 (BEST FEMINIST THEATER - Rhode Island Monthly Editors Pick), OUT LOUD has been featured across numerous multimedia platforms including Rhode Island Monthly, PVD Monthly, The Providence Journal, BroadwayWorld, Motif Magazine, The Pawtucket Times, and TAKE Magazine. OUT LOUD was named BEST ENSEMBLE of 2019 by Motif Magazine for their collaborative work on The Rocky Horror Show.
